Week 1
2017.9.27 Wednesday
New to UK, New to this uni. I am super glad finally I can do this module after all of those trouble with registry.
The module started with a trip to east London, which was super cool. I was lucky that I still made it meet up with tutors and classmates at Emirates Air-line after google-map led me to an Emirates Airline agency. What an experience of studying abroad…
I was free to shot anything I want. I spent most of the time having a chat with an old man who was painting his boat named Talulah in the dock area, and took a series of documentary photographs. I noticed many classmates were pretty interested in and good at architecture, for me, I’m more used to care about people I meet, and their lifestyles.
The old man is 64 years old, just retired from his last sailing to Netherland and Denmark this January. He invited me on board and showed me all the maps he used, it just reminded me of the movie Dunkirk. He sail the boat for hobby, see the world and meet people as he said.
I edited the photos in a pretty contrast way, strengthen the color green and white, which works with me.
Super nice experience, what a way to begin this module.
2017.9.28 Thursday
I have missed the module introduction this morning, due to I am doing another module in TV at the same time, these two clashes today. it won’t happen in the following weeks.
Week 2
2017.10.3 Tuesday
First tutorial with Ulrike and the group, I was a bit nervous showing my works for the first time.
I told the story. I am glad I had written it down the day back from the trip. Information is such a key element for documentary photography.
In the afternoon we have the workshop with medium format cameras.
2017.10.4 Wednesday
First lecture with Teemu. The topic was photography and social discipline. learned the advent of portraiture and its relation with social classes. It provided a new angle to study photography as a historic technology.
Week 3
2017.10.10 Tuesday
Workshop with film media format camera. It is my first time looking through a glass viewfinder on a media format camera, I have to admit it is addicting.
I quickly picked up how it works. In the afternoon, our three-people group worked out of location lighting and portraiture, I realized shooting in film camera just helps a lot for people to understand why they are using this exposure.
2017.10.11 Wednesday
Lecture with Teemu. The topic was Exploitation or Empathic Identification. Teemu talked about documentary photography and stressed a sense of non-evolvement, a sense of doesn’t care. From a perspective of social relations.
Week 4
2017.10.17 Tuesday
Tutorial with Ulrike. We first talked about the idea of final project. the talk itself was inspiring So basically, I was thinking about the how I feel about Chinatown, and wonder if I could present it by images.
Chinatown did bring me some fresh feelings, I’ve been in London for a month now, still I couldn’t point out why it makes me feel different. When I see those Chinese who have similar appearance as I do, and those shops and restaurant with the words I know, but I just feel all of theses are different form what I knew from mainland China. More close to those depiction of Chinatown from movies like Once upon Time in America, just like in New York or San Fransisco. I believe it is about adaptation. Some have changed in a new country, but some remains.
In the afternoon, printing workshop with Allen. At beginning, I didn’t regard printing as an important process of photography, for I am more relied on social platforms of photography. But after the practice, I began to feel that there are a lot to care about during the process of printing.
2017.10.18 Wednesday
Lecture with Teemu. The topic is citizenship. It discuss a lot about rights and power. There’s a definition of power: a such ability to bring about exception. I didn’t imagine this module could provide such deep access to discussion of rights and power. I am really impressed.
I began to understand why this kind of education and system would be able to produce many of the greatest photospheres in the history. It is not about the facts you were told by your education, it is about such good access to discussion, being exposed to different thoughts, and the ability to emerge new thoughts. A good photographer must be a good human being with good insight to the society and the world. it is more than techniques but thoughts.
Week 5
2017.10.25 Wednesday
Lectures with Teemu. This time, Teemu introduced a lot of different ideas from Hume and Kant. Finally there was a introduction of prison photography, as far as I understand, it talked about how photography works as a tool for classification of people in prison and furthermore, a means of anthropology study, and with its development, it connected with Nazi racial polices.
How do human use a technology, it is a eternal issue.
2017.10.27 Thursday
Workshop of salt print
Week 6
I was fully occupied in this week by my another module which is TV, there’s a final project for that module…i missed the workshop of salt print on Tuesdays and miss the first artist talk on Wednesday…at the same time, just made a start of my final project on Friday. Worried.
I went to china town on both Friday and Saturday, I find it much more tourism than I thought, I tried to asked for portraiture, rejected mostly.
Week 7
I went to chinatown everyday in this week. the more I explore it, the harder I find it to be. I was totally involved in chinatown now, my fresh feelings were fading…i couldn’t feel as how I feel when I firstly came here. Just like what Ulrike said about “fresh eyes”. I don’t feel new to London anymore.
The project was still resistant by most people. There were some interested objects going on: a Chinese aquatic product shop, Chinese traditional medicine shops…but they all showed a great rejection to my intention of further communication, especially to my camera.
At some point I feel this project would not work any more. Because all I could do was just shooting street photography from a distant, without a thorough access, without a story to tell, which is not my ideal way of working. I began to feel the limitations and has part of documentary, it is just easier to do a studio work with I have total control. But that’s also why documentary fascinates me.
I found out the window and the old lady making dumplings for a Chinese restaurant. It didn’t attracts me at the beginning because dumplings are nothing special to me. But when I saw tourists taking photos through the window, especially Westerners, I found it attractive. I walked into the restaurant and suddenly I feel a totally different atmosphere from the outside. It was quite, with few people, and the old lady was just focused on her dumplings. After finished my dinner, I talked to her, and finally got the story of when she came to uk, and how she feel about living abroad. I feel relief. Finally the documentary works.
But two week-repair of my laptop made my work extremely difficult.
Week 8
2017.11.14 Tuesday
Tutorial with Ulrike, I presented the photographs of the lady in the dumpling restaurant. The idea was approved, and there are more photographs to be shot. More portraiture would be needed, and more details of her life.
2017.11.15 Wednesday
Visiting artist Jonathan Michael Ray.
2017.11.17 Friday
Go to china town at 10pm, a good timing after the restaurant is closed and staff coming off. I thought there were chances for further talk with her, but she just came with other stuff, and I came towards her asking if she could have a talk with me, which might be a bit rude, after I explaining what I do and what I wanted her do, she reacted my intention politely.
Very disappointing. This one can not work anymore.
2017.11.20 Weekdens
Just after the former work failed, I learned it form my friend that her cousin is a boxer, and heading to a big fight, she asked me if I could help with filming a bit. A good chance to get to know local people.
Learnt some basic information of the boxer and his boxing club. It is base in luton, where there were lost of gangs and crimes happened, and lots of youngsters involved, the boxer himself had some trouble when he’s grown up. He and his cousin started the club to make money, as well as helping the community and the kids from gangs and violence.
I got the idea of how sports let youngsters express them self help them with negative mood. Looking forward to this project.
Week 9
2017.11.21 Tuesday
first shot. It is very dynamic in side the boxing club, contrast with outside cold streets. Youngsters were trying them best to work out. I did feel boxing as a community help them a lot. They all got very tired after one hour working out.
2017.11.24 Friday
Second shot. Encountered lots of kid this time, the youngest was just 4, well equipped like a really professional one. Some kids were so active in front of camera, I found that instead of just taking picture of kids doing boxing, I should have my focus. I found it, capture the moment when kids are releasing themselves, capture some moments with mood.
Week 10
2017.12.1 Friday
Final shot inside the gym. It went well. Got some really nice pictures.
2017.12.2 Saturday
Follow the boxer, he was having a match in London. Thinking of how a proper fight will contribute to the final project. I took a series of pictures of different fighter. The lighting inside the hall was fine, keep my shutter speed 1/1000. I got a series of sports photography at the end of the day.
Coming back to uni at midnight after all the fight finished.
Week 11
Editing. I had to give photos I took from the fight as part of the final project, because that would be too many pictures then. Still, did a strict selection of photos of youngsters form the boxing club, I personally feel these are better, with more connotation. The pictures from the fight were good, but just some sports photography.
2017.12.7 Meeting with the group and tutors, getting feedback. I haven’t got the selection printed in the morning. Waste a bit of time. Pull up some of the photos on the wall. Printed with the lowest quality, but accidentally gave it a style of newspaper or magazine I guess?
I was happy that this series of photos seemed to be liked by peers and tutors gave me encouragement and suggestions. I checked out for Rob Hornstra today. The Sochi project, it is very impressive, a way of anthropology study. Just not very sure how can I do with my projects like that. Weekends
Checking for Brooberg&Chanarin. I think this style works with my project. Thinking about text.
Week 12
2017.12.11 Monday
Big decision. Reedit all the selection from colored to black and white. I just want to keep it more coherent, but honestly don’t have so much experience with b&w editing and printing.
2017.12.13 Wednesday
Didn’t got chances to print my selection. Did top up my printing credit.
2017.12.15 Friday
Got my works printed today, the color turned our to be warmer even it is all in b&w. Handed it to Michael, and he will help me pull up in January. It is a shame that I paid for 30 pound to print them, but I won’t have it with me back home. Finally I decided to name my project the Gym.
Said goodbye to my friend and Ulrike. I and pretty sure that I had a great experience in these semester, as a study, as a foreigner. I will miss everything here.
